Display - Intel Abandons LCOS Chip Development
October 29, 2004
Citing reasons of limited return on investment, Intel has now decided to discontinue development of LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) chips.

Used for large flat panel TVs, LCOS chips were originally part of Intel's drive into consumer electronics markets, where the company was looking to eat into TI's dominance in the digital display market. However, as technological barriers surrounding LCOS chips remain high, Intel saw no great business potential and, after previous rollout delays, decided to drop the plan altogether. Instead, the company is will invest more R&D resources on dual-core processors and other core businesses.

Earlier, Philips also abandoned its LCOS business. Sony and JVC are the only companies involved in the development of LCOS chips.
